Ethan Allen Brown
Ethan Allen Brown was born on July 4, 1776, in Darien, Connecticut to a Revolutionary War hero father. After studying Law in New York under Alexander Hamilton, Brown was admitted to the Bar in 1802 and shortly thereafter began his journey west.
Ending up along the Ohio River in Rising Sun, Ethan Allen Brown moved to Ohio where he began a long and illustrious career in Politics. Besides being the Governor of Ohio from 1818-1822, Brown held the esteemed positions of Prosecuting Attorney, Associate Justice of the Ohio State Supreme Court, United states Congressman, Envoy Charge D’Affaires to Brazil, Canal Commissioner for Ohio, and Commissioner of the US Land Office. After leaving office, Ethan Allen Brown settled in Rising Sun, Indiana, where he had purchased over 1000 acres of land. Brown remained active in Politics in Indiana as well where he was a member of the Indiana House of Representation. In 1852, He passed away at the age of 75 while attending the Indiana Democratic Convention in Indianapolis. Ethan Allen Brown is buried in the Cedar Hedge Cemetery on Downey Street in Rising Sun.
